Pittsfield City Jazz Festival Lessons big and small

PITTSFIELD -- Aside from being the director of the American Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Clem DeRosa is a noted educator in his field. Consequently, the sizeable audience assembled in the Colonial Theatre Saturday evening was treated to a lesson in jazz, along with a concert demonstrating why the big band is such an important element in our nation’s musical history.
"The Great American Jazz Book" was the title of the program, and its premiere performance was offered as the centerpiece of the sixth annual Pittsfield CityJazz Festival, with DeRosa offering the spotlight to the arrangers, "the musical architects," he called them, who set the style for music, in this case, jazz.
